Gulf Air denies BA approach over merger

Samer Majali, CEO of Gulf Air has denied media reports that his firm is one of the 12 airlines being approached by British Airways for a possible merger, Meed has reported. "Gulf Air have not been approached regarding this initiative, however it is something the company would consider positively at the appropriate time," he said. British Airways is seeking to create the world's biggest airline group, the International Airlines Group (IAG) following its $7.6bn merger deal with Spain's Iberia.

Bahrain to inject $1.1bn into Gulf Air

Bahrain is to inject BD400m ($1.1bn) additional capital into its national carrier Gulf Air, Reuters has reported. A royal decree has authorised the finance ministry to raise the funds from local and international capital markets. The airline, which flew close to 6 million passengers last year, plans to break even in two to three years after recording a loss of $502m in 2009

Changer les habitudes, pas simple.A lire

Gulf Air strives to overcome gripes with regional fleet

Middle Eastern carrier Gulf Air admits that its experimentation with regional jets has thrown up difficulties with passenger perception as well as operational issues with engines in the harsh environment.

Gulf Air has acquired four Embraer regional jets - two 170s and two 190s - as part of an evaluation of the potential of introducing smaller aircraft to parts of its network.

Chief executive Samer Majali, speaking to ATI at the Arab Air Carriers Organization conference in Cairo last week, said that the Bahrain-based airline had to change passengers' views on short-haul flying.

"People still want to travel for an hour, or an hour-and-a-half, with the biggest widebody," he says, conceding that some passengers "nag and whinge" at the relatively compact space in the regional types.

He points out that travellers used to taking large quantities of baggage are having to adapt to more limited luggage and personal space in the smaller fuselage.

But Majali also points out that the operating economics of the Embraer are "quite attractive". The type is one of three aircraft under consideration by Gulf Air for a permanent regional jet fleet.

"We can use [regional jets] for opening new routes with the smallest possible risk, and build up frequencies faster," says Majali.

Gulf Air admits it has been experiencing operational difficulties with the General Electric CF34 powerplants on the Embraers.

Majali, who oversaw the introduction of Embraer jets to Royal Jordanian Airlines, attributes this to the "rougher environment" on Gulf Air's network.

"We're working with General Electric to solve the problem," he says.

GE states that the local hot and sandy conditions affect all engines, and that the issue with the CF34 is "not unique". Regional aircraft, it points out, are constantly exposed to the harsh environment while larger types often escape to more forgiving areas.

A spokesman adds that GE has been working with airlines in the Middle Eastern region to incorporate new coatings for durability enhancement, design improvements to mitigate these effects, and preventative maintenance.

"We expect these improvement programmes will bring benefits, such as reduced hardware deterioration and increased time on-wing," he says. "However, it is difficult for an engine operating in high-severity environments like this to have the same performance expectations as engines operating in milder conditions."

Saudi Arabian Airlines and Saudi carrier NAS Air also use Embraer 170/190s, while Oman Air is planning to introduce the type

Annulation de 787

Gulf Air appears to cancel eight 787s

Gulf Air appears to be the customer which cancelled an order for eight Boeing 787 aircraft last month.

The airline ordered 16 of the twinjets in January 2008 and supplemented them with a further eight in April 2009.

But Boeing's latest backlog figures show that the 2008 order has been halved to eight of the type, slashing the Bahraini flag-carrier's 787 total from 24 to 16.

Boeing disclosed in June that eight 787s had been removed from its order books, taking total 787 cancellations this year to 20.

Gulf Air could not immediately be reached to confirm the cancellation or to comment.

But the Middle Eastern carrier has been restructuring its fleet in favour of smaller-capacity aircraft, and during the Paris air show selected International Aero Engines powerplants for a batch of six Airbus A320-family twinjets, to be delivered next year.

Bombardier nets Gulf Air order

Bahrain's governmental tender board has revealed an agreement to supply Bombardier regional jets, likely to be CSeries aircraft, to flag-carrier Gulf Air.

The award is detailed in the board's latest update, dated April 2011, which states that Bombardier is the successful bidder under a tender worth $328 million.

The acquisition of Bombardier regional aircraft is significant since the carrier has operated two new Embraer 170s and two new Embraer 190s since last year. According to Flightglobal's ACAS database the four aircraft are under operating lease for a period of eight years.
No details are given as to the aircraft type purchased, but Gulf Air has long been rumoured to be ready to order Bombardier's new twinjet.

Bombardier announced three CSeries orders in June from customers that wished to remain unidentified. The first announcement early in the month was for six CS100s. This was followed by orders at the Paris air show for 10 CS100s plus six options and another order for a further 10 CS100s.

The Canadian airframer has not announced any recent orders for its CRJ regional aircraft.

Gulf Air did not comment on the regional jet purchase.

Gulf Air devrait annoncer la recomposition de sa flotte en commande (787 & A330) lors du Bahrain Int. Air Show en janvier.
Réajustement de commande en raison de la nouvelle stratégie décidée en novembre 2009 faisant très largement appel aux appareils mono-couloirs.

Vers la fin??

From THE NATIONAL:

The government of Bahrain and its biggest sovereign wealth fund are expected to announce within days whether it will close down, sell off or undertake a wholesale restructuring of the struggling carrier Gulf Air.

"Gulf Air has faced challenges in recent times, in common with other carriers around the world and combinations of unprecedented regional and economic factors have made business increasingly difficult," Gulf Air said.

"Given this, Gulf Air, its shareholder Mumtalakat and the government, both through the cabinet and parliament, are all working towards a common goal - to secure Gulf Air's long-term sustainability and to actively address the airline's loss-making position. A range of strategic options are currently under consideration."

They include downsizing Gulf Air or dissolving it, injecting more state funds into it, or even selling it off, according to the Bahraini newspaper Gulf Daily News.

"We expect that [this] week there will be some announcement," Samer Majali, the chief executive of Gulf Air told Bloomberg News.
