While several Asian airlines have been cutting capacity to Europe, Thai Airways believes there are opportunities to increase its market share without impacting its newfound profitability. It does not fear competing with the Gulf airlines, which have pursued ambitious expansion in Southeast Asia in recent years including to Thailand, leading to Southeast Asia-Europe market share gains but pressuring yields.
Thai is now considering the launch of new secondary destinations in Europe using the 787. While Thai has more capacity to Europe than any of its Asian peers, Singapore Airlines has two more destinations (14 in total).
Singapore Airlines used the A350 to launch Dusseldorf in Jul-2016 and plans to use the A350 to launch Stockholm, which will become its fifteenth European destination in May-2017. Thai has similar opportunities to serve more secondary European cities, particularly as new-generation small widebody aircraft are delivered.
Thai plans to start deploying 787s to Europe
Thai plans to take delivery of two 787-9s in 2Q2017 and is planning to retrofit its current fleet of six 787-8s with crew bunks to enable the type to be operated on long haul flights to Europe. Currently Thai uses the 787-8s on regional routes within Asia and to Australia.
Mr Charamporn told CAPA that the 787-8 retrofit project will begin in Jul-2017, and that all six aircraft should be retrofitted by the end of 2017. He said the retrofits involve adding crew bunks and Wi-Fi. There will be no seat changes, and that includes no changes to the business class product, which is lie-flat but in a relatively narrow 2-2-2 configuration.
Once retrofitted the 787-8s will be deployed on thinner existing European routes and to potentially new secondary European destinations. Brussels in particular is being considered, and could support a further increase in frequencies – potentially to daily – under a 787-8 operation.
