Air India to set up global aviation hub at Frankfurt by month-end

According to a PTI report, in a major initiative towards strengthening its global network, Air India will make its first-ever international hub operational at Frankfurt by month-end, launching operations to and from North America with a brand new fleet of Boeing aircraft.

“The Frankfurt hub will become operational on the 29th of this month, beginning of the summer schedule, for some of Air India’s flights and will offer more convenient connections to a larger originating traffic,” said Jitender Bhargava, Executive Director, Air India. AI’s decision to have a global hub in Europe follows a similar hub being operated by Jet Airways.

At Frankfurt, a passenger flying from Delhi to Newark will be transferred to the Mumbai-Newark flight and a person travelling to Chicago from Mumbai will have to change the aircraft on the Delhi-Chicago route. It will take about 19 hours, including the changeover time at Frankfurt, for a passenger to reach the US cities from India.

Air India Star Alliance Membership Delayed

Oct 4, 2010

By Neelam Mathews

It has been a long road for Star Alliance and its future member Air India, whose entry into Star has been delayed by information technology issues. The carrier will now join the world’s largest alliance next summer (instead of March), Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht told The DAILY in Addis Ababa following an announcement that Ethiopian Airlines would join the alliance within 12-18 months.

An Air India spokesman, while unable to confirm a date for completion of the $190-million SITA migration for the Passenger Services System, said, We are targeting the first quarter of 2011. All systems are in place, but the problem is integrating the two codes of Indian Airlines (domestic) and Air India (international), as they are on two parallel tracks.” The two airlines are now part of the holding company National Aviation Company of India Ltd. (NACIL).

While the contract was to be completed within 300 days, an official told The DAILY in April, when the contract was signed, that this was a mammoth task and would take a year.

“We knew this was difficult. The new target now is mid-2011,” Albrecht confirmed. He added that Air India is going forward "full steam.”

Air India has been addressing four different issues simultaneously, said Albrecht. "There is the protocol program between Air India and Indian Airlines, migration to the new reservations program, fleet modernization to integrate with safety and, lastly, the alliance.”

The Air India official said employees were being sent for training on the SITA system.

The IT project has been riddled with difficulties. The integration must meet certain compliance standards that first have to be worked out between the two NACIL carriers. Unlike Jet Airways, which has a frequent flyer program (FFP) that is integrated with its subsidiary carriers, Air India’s FFP must build a tier system, such as Gold and Platinum, to enable it to integrate with Star members. To do that, its FFP must first be integrated with the Indian Airlines program. This remains a major issue, an airline official told The DAILY.

"The dynamism is missing, and there is also a concern about motivation at Air India as nobody is willing to take responsibility for fear of being blamed if there is a failure,” says an analyst.

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/tra ... 81574.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Dublin is also one of the three lowest-cost airports in Europe. Another major factor in favour of Dublin airport is that it offers full customs and immigration clearance for passengers going onwards to the US,”

Air India fails to meet Star Alliance deadline

Air India's integration into Star Alliance has been put “on hold”, after it failed to meet the alliance’s standards.

The carrier's planned membership of the alliance was first announced in 2007, and it had been due to complete the joining process by last year.

In May, however, Star Alliance had given Air India a deadline of July 31 (see online news May 10) to meet the minimum terms of its joining contract, which, as it has now emerged, it was unable to do.

The decision to suspend the integration process was reached by the member airlines of Star Alliance and Air India itself, according to an official statement.

The Indian airline failed to meet the minimum joining conditions that were contractually agreed in December 2007.

The status of Air India's application underwent a review at a meeting attended by Jaan Albrecht, Star Alliance's CEO, Arvind Jadhay, Air India's CMD, and representatives from the Indian Ministry for Civil Aviation.

Albrecht said: “With the collective decision to put the integration efforts on hold today we aim to contribute to Air India’s flexibility to concentrate on its ongoing strategic reorientation.

“In this process our member carriers will continue to provide assistance to Air India wherever required.”

Air India Surprised By Star Rejection

Air India’s entry into Star Alliance has been delayed indefinitely after the airline alliance put on hold the Indian flag carrier’s application for a membership. The final decision on suspending Air India’s integration into the 27-airline alliance was made by Star’s executive board at a meeting in Frankfurt Sunday.

A dejected Air India says it fulfilled all conditions of membership, but that is not how Star saw it.

“The member airlines of the Star Alliance network and Air India have jointly concluded that the integration of Air India into the global airline alliance will be suspended. This is due to the fact that Air India has not met the minimum joining conditions that were contractually agreed in December 2007,” the alliance says in a statement.

The date for fulfilling various conditions to join the alliance was July 31.

An Air India spokesman confirmed the board’s decision and told Aviation Week, “The decision is strange. We have fulfilled all conditions, barring a few trivial ones that arise at the time of boarding and others related to lounge facilities and customer database. There are no technical flaws that need to be addressed.”

The spokesman also said that Air India previously had received a letter from the Star Alliance “stating we had fulfilled all the minimum joining requirements, so we don’t know what went wrong.” He suggested there was a communications issue “but we will sort out all issues soon.”

Air India started working on the technical formalities to join the Star Alliance in 2007 and originally was slated to join the alliance in 2010. But the airline experienced several hurdles, including meeting major membership standards, especially those relating to information technology system integration. Lufthansa, a founding member of the alliance and Air India’s mentor in the membership process, recently said that the Indian carrier needed to complete the formalities to meet all criteria before the July 31 deadline.

Cash-strapped Air India was hoping that its induction into the Star Alliance would help expand its global footprint and boost its revenues. A senior official of the airline had recently stated that joining the global alliance would bring Air India an increase of 9% to 15% in revenues.

Kapil Kaul, chief executive of the South Asia unit of the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation, an industry research group, tells Aviation Week that although the announcement has caused major embarrassment to the Indian government and came as a surprise to Air India, “the alliance, if successful, would still not have brought any relief to the ailing state carrier.”

Air India’s current annual interest cost to its lenders stands at 34 billion rupees ($771.3 million). The airline has a debt of 440 billion rupees and is awaiting a go-ahead for its turnaround plan from the government.
“Air India does not even have a restructuring team to work out its turnaround plan,” Kaul says.

A panel of federal ministers is expected to meet again on Aug. 17 to decide on the financial and business restructuring plan.
Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht says, “With the collective decision to put the integration efforts on hold today we aim to contribute to Air India’s flexibility to concentrate on its ongoing strategic reorientation. In this process our member carriers will continue to provide assistance to Air India wherever required.”

Existing bilateral relationships with Star Alliance member airlines are not affected by this decision, which also leaves room to discuss a potential Alliance membership at a future stage, if deemed appropriate by both parties, the alliance says.

After losing Star Alliance, AI makes effort to join SkyTeam

Having failed to make it to Star Alliance, Air India has begun efforts to become part of rival aviation services alliance, SkyTeam. Top aviation ministry officials explored the opportunity for Air India with SkyTeam managing director Michael Wisbrun last week. SkyTeam is an alliance of 14 global air carriers.

Top civil aviation officials said that Sky Team managing director Michael Wisburn had one round of discussions last weekend with top brass of the nodal ministry led by secretary Nasim Zaidi.

The officials who declined to be quoted said any decision to change course would have to be taken by Air India’s board instead of the government. The meeting with SkyTeam comes close on the heels of a virtual collapse of Air India’s attempts to enter the largest aviation alliance, Star Alliance late last month.

“It is for the new chief executive, Rohit Nandan, to take a decision on terminating or reopening negotiations with Star Alliance. But the options are open,” the officials said. SkyTeam is the second largest aviation alliance in the world serving close to about 920 destinations. Prominent SkyTeam members include Dutch carrier, KLM, AeroFlot, Delta, Alitalia, Air Europa and Vietnam Airlines.

SkyTeam’s Wisbrun meeting with civil aviation ministry officials assumes significance, as Air India is to yet formally declare any form of scrapping of negotiations with Star Alliance. The officials said, “Since Air India is the national carrier, our efforts to get it into the alliance.” The officials added, that private sector carriers, that were beginning their international operations could join the alliance after AI induction.

But Star Alliance in an email had indicated that entry of Air India was not on the agenda when the chief executives board meets in December this year. The email reply from Star Alliance’s vice-president corporate office had said, “Not from the current perspective.” The email though added, “But leaves room to discuss a potential Alliance membership at a future stage, if deemed appropriate by both parties.”

Star Alliance had called off Air India’s induction into the grouping late last month on the grounds that the carrier had failed to comply with some of the conditions to join the alliance.

Air India Has No Money To Buy Boeing 787, Says Aviation Minister

Debt-ridden national carrier Air India does not have the funds to pay for the 27 Boeing 787s it has ordered, Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi said Sept. 9, a day after the country’s nodal public auditing agency flayed the state-run airline’s hasty expansion plans.

“The decision to acquire a large number of aircraft was risky and has contributed predominantly to the airline's massive debt liability,” the comptroller and auditor general (CAG) said in a report sent to parliament on Sept. 8. The fleet acquisition process also took an “unduly long time,” the CAG said.

Ravi, in reacting to this report, says that the delivery of the 27 aircraft had been delayed by Boeing for three years. He did not specify whether the order would be confirmed or canceled, but made clear that if these aircraft were delivered, there is no money to pay for them.

“I don’t have the money to pay ... I cannot beg the finance minister all the time for the money. It is difficult. This is the position now. The government cannot say we are confirming or we are rejecting,” the minister said in an interview on a local news channel. The delivery of the first Boeing 787 to Air India is reported to have been further delayed by two months to December.

The CAG report tabled in parliament last week takes the Civil Aviation Ministry to task for a faulty and hasty expansion plan that involved funding the purchase of new planes with debt or loans, calling it a “recipe for disaster.” The CAG said this led the airline to its current financially crippled state. To a suggestion by the CAG that Air India be left alone by the government to have a chance for survival, Ravi says the ministry will intervene to look at profitability, admitting that it is currently difficult to meet payroll. “This is the situation, that is the interference. You must understand our problem,” he said.
