Air Nigeria

Message par AirKd »

Air Nigeria, the country’s fully private sector flag carrier, is set to launch flight operations to Sao Tome via Douala and Libreville, in continuation of its regional routes network roll out. The launch of the new route is coming just as Air Nigeria recently introduced direct flights between Abuja and Enugu as well as Abuja and Owerri on the domestic route network.

Air Nigeria to Go Public in 2014

Nigeria’s major carrier, Air Nigeria would become a public quoted company in 2014, as the management plans to list it in the Nigeria Stock Exchange and sell the shares to the Nigerian public.

This was disclosed by the chairman of the company, Mr. Jimo Ibrahim, at a dinner in London to mark the inaugural flight of the airline from Lagos to London at the weekend.

‘I want to assure you that effective two years from now; we will be depositing Air Nigeria into your hands. What does that mean? Air Nigeria will now have to go PLC. It will now be an airline owned by Nigerians. I will sell my shares, and then you can buy some. Air Nigeria will be in the market. So we will meet at Annual General Meetings, and then we will discuss. So that is our plans. By then, Air Nigeria will be fully Nigerian,’ Ibrahim said.

He disclosed that the Nigeria Stock Exchange had invited the company this year to come and be listed under the special registry so that Air Nigeria would be in the market.

‘You will be a shareholder, I will be a shareholder. It will be our airline,’ he added.

Also the Chairman of Air Nigeria decried the huge amount of money Nigerian airlines spend overseas to maintain their aircraft, noting that if there is maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Nigeria, over 60 per cent of billions of Naira spent overseas would have been saved.

He noted that Africa is now testing recession for the first time, predicting that by the end of the year, the Naira would become N200 for one dollar.

Ibrahim remarked that part of the capital flight from the country is the huge money airlines spend on maintenance overseas, which lead to the devaluation of Nigeria’s currency.

He called on the Federal Government to partner with the private sector to establish a maintenance facility in Nigeria.

On the plans of Air Nigeria to become a dominant airline in Nigeria and a global carrier, the Chairman of Global Fleet said that Air Nigeria would acquire more aircraft, expand its international operations and may reduce its domestic routes, while also expanding its regional services.

“Our plan is to focus on international operations as an airline. No airline succeeds by flying only domestic. If an aircraft flies to Abuja 10 times a day, it loses its life cycle ten times. In other words, it is 10 times closer to a C-check. All the major international airlines like British Airways, Air France and KLM make profit by focusing on international operations.

“We will take delivery of another aircraft in 20 days from now-An Airbus A330-200. We will then have two aircraft in our international operations. And this aircraft will be deployed to the Lagos-Dubai route”, he said
He said that among the international routes the airline would deploy these aircraft to would include Rome and Paris.

He disclosed that data available from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) showed that 58,000 passengers travelled to Rome last year; adding that Italian airline, Alitalia carried only 27,000 of these people and the rest were carried by other foreign carriers.

“ So there is a beckoning market to those destinations. ‘So we will be flying Lagos-Rome-Paris. ‘We have got government approval to fly to Rome, Paris, Johannesburg and Dubai. We will start flying to Dubai before the end of this quarter”, he said.

On what the business passengers that chose Air Nigeria would enjoy to make the airline be preferred to others, Ibrahim said, “there are lots of things. Apart from the varieties of meals, every business class passengers will have access to Ipads. With that they have array of entertainment to choose from. For the business class passengers, our Lagos-London flight is the best place to relax after all the stress of business. It is quite an unending experience.”.

He said that in the next five years from now, Air Nigeria would be flying a minimum of 15 big jets (wide body aircraft).

“There is no continent we won’t be flying to five years from now. This year, we have gone places. This is here in Europe, we are here. When you wake up in the morning in Lagos, you can fly to any part of the world on Air Nigeria.”

C'est un peu dommage. Tout y était, la flotte, les fréquences, le back-up managérial de Virgin au début. Encore une aventure à mettre au débit des ailes de l'Afrique Sub-Saharienne !
