UK's Monarch Airlines cancels entire 787 order
By David Kaminski-Morrow

UK holiday carrier Monarch Airlines has emerged as the latest customer to cancel its Boeing 787 order, confirming it was the carrier behind last week's axing of six aircraft from the twinjet's backlog.

The company said it has "reassessed its decision" to purchase the aircraft, following plans disclosed in June to concentrate on reinforcing its scheduled short-haul operations.

But it added that the cancellation "does not affect" the plan by its maintenance arm, Monarch Aircraft Engineering, to support the 787.

Monarch said the maintenance division was "committed" to providing line and base services for the twinjet from early next year, along with its support for Boeing 737, 757, 767 and 777 jets.

"[We] will see further expansion into new UK bases and new routes from 2012, while remaining dedicated to supporting [our] long-standing tour operator partner needs," said the airline.

"Further consideration will be given to developing and strengthening long-haul options in the future."

Monarch, which revealed its plan to acquire the Rolls-Royce Trent-powered 787s in 2006, had originally intended to take delivery from 2010. But it recently said that delays to the programme had pushed their introduction back to around 2014.

Its order cancellation brings the number of 787s in the firm backlog down to 821.

Monarch embarks on its “Italian Job” with significant expansion to flight routes

Scheduled leisure airline introducing new routes into Italy and Croatia

Monarch Airlines is announcing a significant expansion into the Mediterranean during summer 2012 launching 14 new flight routes across Italy, Croatia and Greece.

The new routes are part of Monarch’s expansion strategy revealed in June this year that is focusing on its scheduled services and expanding its network to new leisure destinations across Europe.

There will also be two additional Airbus A320 aircraft being added into Monarch’s fleet from March 2012, which is the start of its expansion plans that will see the fleet grow from 30 to around 40 aircraft.

Flights to the 14 new routes from Monarch’s four UK bases go on sale from the 4th November, available from: http://www.monarch.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Monarch Airlines’ new routes for Summer 2012 include:

- Manchester to Dubrovnik, Milan, Venice and Verona
- Birmingham to Dubrovnik, Heraklion, Milan, Rome and Venice
- London Gatwick to Dubrovnik, Heraklion, Milan and Venice
- London Luton to Rome

Commenting on the expansion plans, Managing Director of Monarch Airlines, Kevin George said: “The strategy for Monarch Airlines is now firmly focused on its scheduled operations and we are delighted to be adding these new routes to our already extensive network of leisure destinations across Europe.

“Adding Italy to our network will further reinforce our position as the leading leisure focused airline serving the Mediterranean and the Canaries. The addition of two new aircraft to the fleet is great news, and marks the start of our fleet expansion plans, which will see the fleet grow from 30 to around 40 aircraft in the medium term.

“In addition to growing our network, we are committed to providing high levels of care and service for our customers and are constantly striving for innovative ways of providing great value benefits for them at year-round low fares. The introduction of our discounted ‘Happy Hour’ cheap flights and our fight against unjust debit and credit card fees are examples of ways in which Monarch Airlines looks after its customers and we are excited about introducing these initiatives across our expanding network.”

Flights on all Monarch’s new routes will be on sale from Friday, 4th November via http://www.monarch.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and available to book until October 2012.

Birmingham shuts as Aurela 737 veers off runway

Source: Flightglobal

Flights have been suspended at Birmingham airport in the UK after a Lithuanian-operated aircraft apparently veered off the runway.

The Monarch Airlines service, flight number ZB467, had been operated by Aurela Airlines.

Images from the scene suggest the aircraft involved is a Boeing 737-300 (LY-SKA) and that it has come to a halt on a grassy area.

Birmingham airport's operator says the flight had been arriving from Nice and that the incident occurred at 13:11.

"At the present time, airfield services are assisting the airline crew," it adds. "We can confirm that there were no injuries and no one was hurt.

"The passengers left the aircraft using the steps and are currently being transferred to the terminal where they will be looked after while the bags are removed from the aircraft hold."

Flights from the airport have been suspended, it adds.

Birmingham has a single runway, designated 15/33. Weather data for the time of the incident indicates good visibility but light rain.

Je le mets avec Monarch car le vol opéré est de cette compagnie alors que l'avion vient de Lithuanie.

Monarch Plans 45-Jet Order Next Year in Low-Cost Carrier Pursuit

Monarch Airlines Ltd. said it will order 45 single-aisle aircraft before the end of 2013 as it retires older jets and seeks to transform itself from a charter carrier into a discount operator along the lines of EasyJet Plc. (EZJ)

The planes would be delivered through 2021, Executive Chairman Iain Rawlinson said in an interview. While Monarch’s fleet is mainly from Airbus SAS’s A320-series, it will consider buying 737s from Boeing Co. (BA) and models from other manufacturers.

“This is going to be a very important element to making Monarch properly benchmarked with the low-cost carriers,” Rawlinson said today by telephone. The airline, which has typically operated a mixture of jets, will seek to streamline the fleet around a single type, he said.

Monarch, based at Luton airport, north of London, will take delivery of two Airbus A320s and two A321s next year, boosting the total to 38 aircraft.

Monarch Airlines from 23APR13 is cancelling Birmingham – Munich service, as the airline is no longer opening reservations for travel on/after this date. In April 2013, the airline operates twice weekly service with Airbus A321 aircraft.

https://www.aerotime.aero/articles/mona ... -postponed

A statement from our Board:
It is with immense regret that we announce today that we have been forced to put the brakes on our process to relaunch Monarch. This is not a decision that we have taken lightly, however since taking over the business two weeks ago we have drawn close to exhausted the start-up funding provided to us far more rapidly than anticipated.

We have been seeking alternative routes, such as partial divestment of share capital, and will continue to do so, however at the current stage there is no practical option to move forward in the immediate future.

Un tweet officiel de Monarch dit que la compagnie prévoit de ne pas arrêter de planifier le redémarrage.
Un démarrage est prévu à l’été 2024. (Certainement beaucoup plus tard si la compagnie redémarre vraiment.)

“ Despite rumours of Monarch ceasing planning for our imminent restarting of operations, We can confirm that we are NOT ceasing planning. We plan to start operations during Summer 2024. ”
