With Qatar Airways as new member, oneworld seeks to regain momentum but may become more divisive

The global upheaval in airline alliances and partnerships will only intensify with the oneworld alliance expected to announce in New York City on 08-Oct-2012 the membership of Qatar Airways, sponsored by International Airlines Group (IAG). oneworld will seek to regain momentum after failing so far to secure an Indian and mainland Chinese member. It is also the smallest and loosest of the three marketing alliances and in recent years has had carriers frequently in financial straits, including Mexicana (now defunct), Malev (now defunct) Japan Airlines and American Airlines.

While Qatar's addition would indicate unanimous approval from oneworld carriers, it would not have been attained easily and does not guarantee all carriers are pleased. Qatar for IAG's British Airways and Iberia will be a deep partner while for others – chiefly Cathay Pacific, Finnair and Qantas – it will be a competitor and they must sort through how to integrate Qatar into their web at a time marketing alliances are losing lustre to a Middle East-centric approach. For this redirection of global aviation strategy, there is no guide. Qatar and oneworld are writing a new rulebook.

Qatar allies with Oneworld

Source: Flightglobal

Qatar Airways plans to join the Oneworld alliance within the next 18 months, after being elected as a member designate by the alliance's other members.

The Doha-based airline will be the alliance's 14th member, including fellow member designates Malaysia Airlines and SriLankan Airlines, and second in the Middle East after Royal Jordanian.

Qatar's entrance into Oneworld could raise pressure on the Persian Gulf's two other major unaligned carriers, Emirates and Etihad. Etihad has recently signed a codeshare deal with Air France and KLM, both SkyTeam members. Emirates has remained outspoken as an opponent of the three global airline alliances, but recently announced a wide-ranging parternship with Qantas Airways, a Oneworld member.

Qatar chief executive Akbar Al Baker made the announcement with other Oneworld member airline chief executives in New York today.

"Alliances are playing an increasingly important role in the airline industry today--and that will continue long into the future," he says. "Qatar Airways has carefully reviewed its strategic options and it is very clear that joining Oneworld is by far the best way forward."

Qatar brings 15 new destinations and three new countries to the Oneworld map.

Qatar's Oneworld membership upsets AA pilots

American Airlines (AA) pilots have expressed their objection to Qatar Airways' decision to join the Oneworld alliance, saying the move would impact their careers, the Associated Press has reported.
The codeshare alliance "cuts in on our flying and our jobs," AA Captain John Diacsuk told the news service.
Qatar Airways became yesterday the first of the three major airlines based in the Gulf to sign for any of the global airline alliances. The Doha-based airline currently flies to three US destinations; New York, Washington and Chicago.

Oman reste discrete...
Gulf Air semble encore survivre...
