RwandAir + Aviation Rwandaise

The Rwandan national airline, RwandAir, is continuing to work towards achieving operational and financial status, which will allow the government to rekindle the search for a partner airline. This information was given last week by the chairman of the board of directors of RwandAir Mr. John Mirenge. The airline only very recently recruited a new CEO, Mr. Rene Janata, who previously held senior management positions with Germany’s Lufthansa – making it an interesting constellation when privatization efforts get underway again after two years of relative inactivity.

Lufthansa now owns a major share of Brussels Airlines (SN) and will soon decide to acquire a majority of the Belgian national airline’s shares. It was, in fact, SN which had put in a bid for RwandAir four years ago. This bid, however, was found wanting at the time, as the proposal was based on the introduction of BAE 146 aircraft, generally thought unsuitable for the operational altitudes of airports in the region with the added alleged sensitivity of the engines to dust and grit also giving cause for concern.

However, under the new constellation, the bid could be renewed, giving the Lufthansa group a base in the East African region through partner airline SN. RwandAir now has two CRJ200 aircraft flying, incidentally purchased from Lufthansa inclusive of maintenance support at the Kigali home base, setting the stage for financial and operational savings and improvements required before the Rwandan government will renew the search for a choice partner.

RwandAir announced leading aircraft seat manufacturer Brice Seating, a part of the TIMCO Aerosystems family of interior products, its selected seat supplier. The B1010 economy seat and its B2054 business class seat have been selected for installation on the new B737-800 aircraft deliveries. Each of the seat products will include a robust, built-in entertainment system, providing passengers with the latest state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment.

The Brice seats will be part of the first new Boeing “Sky Interior” cabin concept for aircraft based on the African continent. The new design, revealed for the first time by Boeing in April 2009, includes new ambient lighting, spacious entry and aisle areas, larger stowage bins and fuel-saving structural improvements due to lighter weight.

“We become the first carrier on the continent to have Sky Interior cabin with these B737-800. Of course Brice Seating products for economy and business class are on the spot with our agenda to give our preferred travelers an outstanding cabin experience” said RwandAir CEO Rene Janata.

Rick Salanitri, President of TIMCO Aerosystems, observed, "As you might imagine, we are truly excited that RwandAir has selected Brice Seating. Our team is highly motivated to deliver superior products and service for our important, new customer.” Through Brice Seating, TIMCO Aerosystems supports the world’s leading airlines with innovative seating design and manufactured solutions, including the new FeatherWeight series of weight-saving products. TIMCO Aerosystems, a division of TIMCO Aviation Services, Inc., is one of a select few providers that can support its customers through every facet of the interior modification process, from state-of-the-art design and engineering to systems and structures manufacture, integration and certification.

RwandAir is the national carrier of Rwanda and serves all East African community capital cities with daily flights and it flies to Johannesburg five times a week. The airline currently has a fleet of two Boeing 737-500, two Bombardier CRJ and a Dash 8 with two Boeing 737-800 joining the fleet in 2011. The carrier is aggressively growing its fleet to cater for its network expansion plans that will see it fly to more regional and intercontinental destinations.

RwandAir launches SMS service for flight schedule on regional mobile networks

Send RwandAir [SPACE] destination to either 123 on MTN or 7333 on Tigo to get schedule.

September 8, 2010 - Kigali- RwandAir has unveiled a new flight schedule on SMS service that will allow its travellers to query its flight schedule via SMS and get instant auto response with accurate flight details. The service, which is already active in Rwanda on MTN and Tigo networks will be rolled out in phases to cover the entire East African networks and other networks on RwandAir destinations.

We want to make it very convenient for our customers to know our flight schedule with the least effort by simply sending a text message to their network service provider and getting an instant up to date and accurate schedule. For instance by sending the word RwandAir (space) destination to either 123 on MTN or 7333 on Tigo people in Rwanda can now access our schedule, said Michael Otieno, Manager, Marketing and Corporate Communications RwandAir. At the moment this service is available in Rwanda on MTN and Tigo, the next phase of implementation will cover Burundi, Uganda and finally we will avail the service on Kenyan, South African and Tanzanian mobile networks, he added.

The airline is at advanced stages in its plans to implement an Internet Booking Engine with credit card payment facilities. This booking engine will later be optimized to allow for bookings via mobile phone handsets.

Meanwhile the just concluded Private Sector Federation EXPO2010 has seen the national carrier gross over USD150, 000 in tickets sales. At the onset of the trade fair, RwandAir had announced discounts of between 20-50% on their entire network. The carrier has announced the extension of these fares to September 12, 2010 due to overwhelming demand from travellers.

The national carrier, RwandAir is set to join the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in February 2011, the airline’s top official has revealed.

RwandAir says the move will boost its ticket sales through increased inter-line and code-share contracts with other Airlines. The airline was supposed to have joined the association last year.

RwandAir’s Chief Executive Officer, Rene Janata, said the delay was caused by compliance procedures required by the international body.

“We have been in the process of getting a certificate from IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) but the audit took longer than we anticipated,” Janata said.

IOSA program is an internationally recognised and accepted evaluation system designed to assess the operational management and control systems of an airline.

The national carrier is in an expansion process that has seen the company acquire a fleet of five planes including two Boeing 737-500, two Bombardier CRJs and a Dash 8.

“The carrier will also be able to sell more tickets from inter-lining and will also benefit from training programmes provided by the body,” Janata said.

He said that RwandAir’s monthly average passenger numbers has risen by 86 percent to 9,300 passengers this year from 5,000 last year following the acquisition of its own fleet.

The airline acquired two CRJS as well as the two 737-500 Boeings.

RwandAir has started codeshare service with Ethiopian Airlines, which its “WB” code is appearing on 7 of 12 weekly Ethiopian Airlines’ service on Kigali – Addis Ababa service on board Boeing 737 aircraft.

Codeshare flight numbers:

Route WB Codeshare ET Operating
Kigali – Addis Ababa WB806 ET806
Addis Ababa – Kigali WB807 ET807

http://airlineroute.net/2010/11/29/wbet-codeshare/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

RwandAir, the national carrier said, last week, that it recorded a steady growth in passenger traffic of around 18 to 20 percent in 2010 after it expanded its operations amid growing completion in EAC’s aviation industry.

“We have realised a steady growth in passenger numbers since the new equipment has enabled the opening of new destination,” the airline’s Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager, Michael Otieno told Business Times.

The airline uplifted a minimum of 10,000 passengers monthly in the course of 2010, mainly boosted by more capacity on routes like Johannesburg and the launch of new routes like Mombasa and Dubai in the last quarter of 2010, he said.

The company is poised to maintain the trend on account of this year’s anticipated increase in travel demand.
“Passenger revenues definitely grew with the fleet and network expansion. Worthy to note however is that the cost of operation has also increased significantly due to the acquisition of new aircraft and new routes,” Otieno said.

He added that as their operations stabilise they forecast growth on the passenger revenues in 2011, however, they are also keen to diversify and grow other revenue streams as an airline.

Rwandair is currently facing competition from different carriers from the region but, Otieno said that each airline operating out of Kigali has unique products for passengers, hence more travel options.

“Where we have mutually realized we are duplicating efforts we have pursued agreements like code shares and on other fronts we have entered agreements that can have benefits for our clients beyond our network,” he said.

RwandAir to launch Brazzaville flights in March 2011

Feb 1, 2011, Kigali: RwandAir the national carrier of Rwanda will launch direct flights from her operating hub in Kigali to Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo from March 3, 2011. The airline plans to launch the new route with three weekly flights, which are expected to feed and support its existing network.

In a statement to the press RwandAir CEO, John Mirenge, announced that the airline has been evaluating a number of destinations west of Kigali with a view to link Central and West African cities with East Africa. "We are looking at growing our network to the west whilst at the same time doing it in a way that will support our existing routes especially Dubai," he said. Mr. Mirenge further added that the Republic of Congo aviation authorities have granted RwandAir the rights to land in Brazzaville form March 2011. Kigali - Brazzaville will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Brazzaville becomes the thirteenth destination to be added to the RwandAir network and its first this year. The city, which is the home to over one third of the Republic of Congo population lies just across River Congo from Kinshasa.

The carrier has made great strides in its fleet acquisition process by having a combined total of five owned and leased aircraft. The airline will later this year take delivery of two Boeing 737- 800 from Boeing Commercial Airplanes. RwandAir serves all East African community capital cities with daily flights and it flies to Johannesburg and Dubai three times a week.

RwandAir (Kigali) is planning to add its first Boeing 767 and 737-800 in March. The company is also planning to add Johannesburg and the Kigali-JNB February 2 : http://www.capaero.fr/forum/news-afrique-t57s80.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
