Thai Airways to decide on new plane order

Thai Airways International PCL will soon decide on a plan to expand its fleet with 37 new aircraft, more than half of which will be leased, as it seeks to reduce the average age of its fleet to compete with rivals that are offering better services to woo travelers in the rapidly growing Asian market.

The proposed aircraft are in addition to the 26 jets the Bangkok-based carrier has already signed contracts to buy a cost of nearly US$5 billion, and will help the airline increase its fleet size to 105 planes. by 2017, company President Piyasvasti Amranand told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview on the sidelines of an International Air Transport Association meeting in Singapore.

Thai is also spending US$200 million to retrofit the cabins of its existing aircraft as it seeks to retain its passengers, especially on routes such as Bangkok-London, he said.

"We have to speed up the retrofit of the aircraft and speed up the acquisition of aircraft because our aircraft are quite old with high maintenance costs and are fuel inefficient. We are moving forward full steam on the retrofit of the existing aircraft and acquisition of new aircraft," Amranand said.

The proposed order, the biggest ever for the company, will be for 26 long-haul, wide body aircraft and 11 narrow-body aircraft for regional routes. Amranand said the airline is in negotiations with aircraft manufacturers and leasing firms, but declined to say how much the new planes will cost as the company hasn't yet decided how many of the planned 37 jets will be leased.

Aircraft that its has already ordered will start arriving this year, marking the first expansion of the carrier's fleet in five years, Amranand said, adding that the first of the six Airbus A380 jumbo jets on order will arrive next year.

Thai has 12 Airbus A330s and six Airbus A380s on order, while it will be leasing eight Boeing 777 for a 12-year term. It will also lease two Boeing 777s for a short term beginning later this year, he said, without providing a specific time frame. The airline currently flies 85 planes and plans to decommission some older planes, including six passenger Boeing 747s and five Airbus A300-600s.

With the new aircraft, the average age of the airline's fleet will fall to eight years from 11.7 years. In comparison, the average age of the 108 jets owned by regional rival Singapore Airlines Ltd. (C6L.SG) is six years and three months as of March 31, the carrier said last month.

Thai Airways expects to start its medium-fare airline, tentatively called Thai Wing, by the second quarter of next year, Amranand said.

The new unit will be modeled on Silk Air, a unit of Singapore Airlines, and will provide regional connectivity with Thai Airways' long-haul flights. The unit will be a sub-brand of Thai Airways and will use the 11 narrow body aircraft the carrier plans to add to its fleet.

Amranand said bureaucratic red tape in the Thailand transport ministry is holding up the launch of Thai Tiger, a budget airline announced last year in partnership with Singapore-listed Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd. (J7X.SG).

Thai Tiger, in which RyanThai Ltd., a company linked to the founders of European budget carrier Ryanair Holdings PLC (RYA.DB), is an equity partner, will be an "ultra low cost" airline, he said. RyanThai will own a 10% equity stake in Thai Tiger, while Tiger Airways will hold 39% and Thai Airways 49.9%.

Amranand said Thai Airways has managed to partly pass on higher fuel prices to customers by raising fuel surcharges on its tickets. The company also hedges between 40% and 70% of its fuel requirements, he said.

"Fuel hedging works to some extent. Without hedging it would have been worse. But the main instrument still is adjustment of the fuel surcharges," he said, adding that the current surcharges reflect the current fuel prices.

On traffic, the company's president said higher oil prices haven't hurt demand on the airline's main routes but traffic has yet to fully recover after domestic political turmoil last year.

Traffic to Japan, one of its biggest markets, also hasn't fully recovered after dipping 20% from a year earlier in April after the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that damaged a nuclear power plant and released radioactivity.

Thai to operate first A380 on regional routes

Thai Airways International (TG) will deploy its first Airbus A380 on regional routes, most likely Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK)-Hong Kong (HKG).

Speaking to ATW during a visit to Toulouse to view the carrier’s first A380 on the final assembly line, TG executives said the carrier will operate between BKK and Frankfurt (FRA) only “after we receive the second aircraft delivery around November 2012. Upon receiving additional aircraft, Thai will operate to London Heathrow and then Paris Charles de Gaulle.”

According to insiders, daily BKK-FRA service will commence in January 2013 and BKK-LHR service will begin in spring 2013.

TG has six A380s on firm order and plans to take delivery of the first three aircraft next year and three in 2013 (ATW Daily News, Feb. 9, 2010).

The carrier will configure the A380s in a three-class layout with 507 seats: 435 in economy, 60 in business and 12 in first class.

TG’s first A380 entered the final assembly line in Toulouse at the end of November. Front, central, and aft fuselages, wings, horizontal and vertical tail plane have been assembled. This past weekend the aircraft was moved from the electrical installation bay to the hydraulic systems and powerplant installation station, where it will be fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines.
