Bmibaby pulls out of Manchester and Cardiff

No-frills airline bmibaby is to pull out of Manchester and Cardiff airports, but expand at Belfast, East Midlands and Birmingham.
The carrier will drop the 13 routes it operates at Manchester and the 10 it operates at Cardiff from the end of October.
It said it was making the decision because the economic climate meant it had to focus on airports where it had a strong presence and there were strong growth opportunities.
“Our strength is in the Midlands, so it makes sense to consolidate what we have there. We have a great presence and the opportunity is there to expand,” said a spokeswoman.
The carrier had two aircraft at Manchester and two at Cardiff. Two of those will now be based at Belfast City, from where bmibaby will operate seven new routes.
It will operate a summer 2012 programme to Malaga, Alicante, Palma, Faro and Ibiza, as well as a year-round service to Amsterdam, and new flights to Geneva for winter 2011.
One of the aircraft will move to East Midlands, from where the carrier will operate two new routes to Toulouse and Chambery from winter 2011.
The fourth aircraft will be based at Birmingham, and details of new routes from there will be announced shortly.
Meanwhile, British Midland International will maintain its presence at Manchester. It has announced a new service to Frankfurt operated on behalf of Lufthansa, and has launched a new service from Manchester to Basel in Switzerland.
