New British Airways flight to St Kitts underlines commitment to the Caribbean

Paradise just got closer with British Airways starting flights to the unspoilt Caribbean islands of St Kitts and Nevis this winter.

Weekly flights on Saturdays from Gatwick to St Kitts start on January 10, 2009.

British Airways' position as the airline with more flights to the Caribbean than any other UK carrier is further strengthened by the addition of St Kitts to the network.

Adam Daniels, head of leisure sales, said: "This new route to St Kitts underlines our commitment both to the Caribbean and Gatwick and re-establishes a connection between the UK and the island.

"The introduction of St Kitts as a British Airways route means that we now operate to 11 destinations in the Caribbean. The region is performing extremely well for us. Our customers also tell us that they feel secure flying with an airline with an established heritage and longevity in the market in these turbulent times."

Other route news from the airline also includes upping flights to Dubai and Johannesburg next summer and moving Atlanta and Toulouse services from Gatwick to Heathrow Terminal 5.

Winter sun and fantastic shopping continue to boost Dubai's popularity with new five star hotels opening every month. Heathrow flights increase from 14 to 20 each week from March 29, 2009 with a wide range of Dubai hotels available at www.ba.com

Leisure travel to Johannesburg is up as holidaymakers use the city as a gateway to the growing destinations of Botswana and Mozambique as well as a base for exploring South Africa. Business and leisure journeys to the country will also rise when it hosts the 2010 football World Cup. Flights from Heathrow increase from 14 to 19 each week from May 1, 2009.

Atlanta is the latest US destination that the airline is moving from Gatwick to Heathrow following the Open Skies agreement. Gone with the Wind fans can head to Heathrow from March 29, 2009 when daily flights start.

Toulouse flights will also move from Gatwick to Heathrow on March 29, 2009 with two flights each day to the Rose City.

A suivre

Question ... DUB est aussi un AP avec immigration US ou il n'y a que SNN ?

Shannon & Dublin Airports to Provide US Customs Clearance: After years of providing US immigration clearance, Shannon and Dublin Airports are adding US customs clearance to their services. The two Irish airports will become the first airports in Europe to offer full pre-clearance facilities (immigration, customs and agriculture) to passengers traveling to the US. The new customs service, which will eliminate all checkpoints after landing in the US, will mean that airlines will be able to fly to smaller and less expensive airports in the US. Travel times will be shortened, and it may also mean cheaper airfares. The new customs clearance facility will debut in summer 2009 at Shannon, and in 2010 at Dublin. At present, only airports in Canada and the Caribbean offer full immigration and customs services. Officials in the West of Ireland hope that Shannon will become a hub for passengers from all over Europe, since the US has no plans to extend the facilities elsewhere in Europe. In making the announcement, Irish government Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, said: “This Agreement, the first of its kind in Europe, presents very exciting marketing prospects for the Shannon Airport Authority at a particularly challenging time in the international aviation sector.”

Ca va mieux, donc on part faire du shopping

Walsh picks out five rivals ‘in play’

The head of British Airways has identified five European carriers that are likely to come up for sale in the next few years as industry consolidation continues in the world’s second largest aviation market.

Speaking at an investor conference in New York, Willie Walsh, the chief executive of British Airways, highlighted SAS Group, Finnair, Aer Lingus, TAP Portugal and BMI (part of Lufthansa), as airlines that could be “in play” in the near future. The airlines, which are spread throughout Europe and have revenues ranging from a few hundred million euros to about €5bn, have all struggled to break even during the downturn and face significant competitive pressures.

BA has long considered itself as a potential consolidator in Europe – earlier this year the company finally inked a merger with Iberia of Spain – but Mr Walsh was careful to say that he was only interested in BMI for certain.

“There will be opportunities for further consolidation,” he said. “Not all of these airlines would be attractive to us. Some of them would make sense in a BA context some would make sense in an IAG [the holding company for the merged BA and Iberia] context.”

Still, the comments will focus speculation that BA plans to make further mergers and acquisitions a core part of its strategy. In September Mr Walsh said that he had drawn up a list of 12 candidates to buy or merge with after completing the Iberia deal.

For airlines recovering from a run of crippling oil prices in 2008 and then the global recession in 2009, consolidation has become the strategy of choice, promising greater scale and financial strength in an increasingly competitive international market place.

Continental Airlines and United Airlines, both of the US, agreed to merge in May in a deal that created the world’s largest carrier. Meanwhile Lan of Chile and Tam of Brazil proposed a tie-up in August that would reshape the Latin American market.

Mr Walsh said that BMI would make sense for his company, because of the extensive portfolio of landing slots the company holds at Heathrow airport. “If Lufthansa [BMI’s parent company] are looking to sell BMI we would be interested in acquiring it.”

The BA chief executive added that the holding structure that he had established with Iberia was “scalable” and designed to allow further acquisitions to be made even where political considerations might require that the target retain its own brand.

Earlier this week, BA reported record second quarter operating profits and a pre-tax profit of £158m for the six months to the end of September, suggesting it was finally on the recovery track after two long years of losses.

But analysts will be keen to see the benefits of the BA-Iberia before giving their blessing to further consolidation. And the results of those airlines that have joined forces so far have been mixed.

Delta Air Lines, which merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008, has performed little better than its peers when measured on operating margins excluding the impact of fuel – a key industry measure - according to research by JP Morgan.

Indeed for the moment Mr Walsh said that BA would play a passive role for now.

“We are not intending to do anything [but] we have had … lots of phone calls from companies who are looking for a partner,” he said. “So there is no question that consolidation will continue within the industry.”
