Analyst: Embraer Will Develop Narrowbody Jet

A prominent Wall Street aerospace analyst says it is likely that Embraer will develop a new jet that pushes up into the lower end of the narrowbody market now dominated by Airbus and Boeing.

Ronald Epstein of Bank of America Merrill Lynch believes the Brazilian aircraft builder will focus on the lower end of the lucrative narrowbody market with a 130- to 150-seat aircraft tailored for 2,000 nm flights—1,440 nm fewer than the range of a 150-seat Boeing 737-700. “The company can utilize its rolodex of customers and existing service network to grow into a new market,” he wrote in an Aug. 1 note to his clients. Embraer’s current family of E-Jets tops out at 122 seats.

The company has spent the past 16 months studying whether to offer new, more efficient engines on its Embraer 190/195 E-Jets or develop a new, larger aircraft. Now that Boeing has committed to re-engining its 737 and delayed a next-generation replacement, Embraer is expected to announce its decision by the end of the year. “All of its competitors have laid their cards on the table,” Epstein notes. “Bombardier is building the CSeries, Airbus is re-engining the A319/A320/A321 and Boeing will re-engine its [737], assuming board approval. Embraer knows the competitive landscape and can now make a fully informed decision on its future strategy.”

Embraer’s top executives have long downplayed the idea of going head-to-head with Airbus and Boeing. CEO Frederico Curado says the company would have to offer game-changing technologies or identify an untapped market niche. Epstein—who correctly predicted that Boeing would re-engine the 737—believes the 2,000 nm market segment offers a niche “currently absent of meaningful competition.” But others believe such a move would be risky.

“It’s not exactly a sweet spot of the market,” says Teal Group analyst Richard Aboulafia. “You’d be getting into a direct competition with guys who offer a lot more range.” He thinks a better option for Embraer would be to re-engine the 190/195, a move that would cost much less.

JPMorgan analyst Joseph Nadol also takes that view. “We believe Embraer’s next aircraft is more likely to be a modified and re-engined E-Jet, which should keep development costs and risks under control,” he says.
