SOUTH African Express Airways has applied for permission to fly four times a week to Kigali, Rwanda, from OR Tambo International Airport, according to a notice in the Government Gazette of July 30. The airline was not able to comment immediately. (12 aout 2010)

The start-up of Congo Express has provided new jobs in the Congo for ground support staff as well as local people who have been taken to South Africa for training as cabin crew for the new airline. Ntshanga said its next such venture would probably be in Ghana, where there were several potential new local partners. It was also attracted by Senegal.

South Africa's Airline says its on track to announce new routes soon, but the profits have come largely due to cost cutting - income dropped 16%

South African Airways CEO has Siza Mzimela told a media conference in Kempton Park, Johannesburg that the airline had a tough year but posted a pretax profit of R596 million.

"It has been an exceptionally tough year for the aviation industry globally," Siza Mzimela said.

Cash from operations leapt to R1.7 billion from a deficit of R1.8 billion in the previous year.

The major drivers of the airline's improved performance were energy costs for the group which dropped 41 percent to R5.1 billion from R8.6 billion.

Aircraft lease costs also dropped by a large margin - 30 percent to R1.6 billion from R2.3 billion.

Mzimela says costs control were useful and that staff costs were managed "within acceptable parameters".

But worrying, airline income fell 16 percent, from R26.4 billion in 2008/09 to R22.3 billion in 2009/10.

Mzimela says the airline has going to make what he called a significant announcement soon on more routes SAA is planning.

SAA had identified five primary objectives over the next three years includnig generating sustainable earnings, restoring the balance sheet, providing high-quality service and enhancing corporate governance.

SOUTH African Airways’ (SAA’s) still weak balance sheet may force it to lease rather than buy many of the 20 Airbus A320 jets it has ordered from the European aircraft manufacturer to replace its leased fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

SAA spokesman Fani Zulu said last week that despite an improved performance in the past two years, the balance sheet remained weak.

With a net debt-to-equity ratio of 20:1 as at end-March and a list price for the 20 aircraft of more than R10bn — before discounts, it is likely that a significant number of the aircraft will be taken on lease.

"How many we will buy or lease still has to be determined and depends on the funding we are able to secure. We have already held a road show in the US, which was well received, and are planning another one in Europe early in the new year," Mr Zulu said during a tour of the Airbus facility in Toulouse, France, last week.

In addition to the A320s, which will be introduced into the fleet from 2013, SAA will take delivery early next year of six leased A330-300 aircraft, two of which were in final assembly in Toulouse.

The aircraft are being sold to leasing group Air Castle, which in turn will lease them to SAA.

Despite the funding implications, the introduction of new Airbus aircraft into SAA’s fleet from March next year will be vital in allowing the airline to expand its global network with new ultralong- haul flights to China, improved connectivity within Africa, as well as providing a nonstop service to New York or Washington.

This is a significant moment for SAA’s Africa strategy as it will allow the airline to cement its dominance on the continent.

The aim is to provide the widest choice of destinations on the continent while allowing passengers to visit several African countries on a single trip using SAA without having to return to Johannesburg first.

At the same time the new routes will allow SAA to tap the lucrative Chinese market as well as compete for the first time with Delta Airlines by putting on a direct flight to New York or Washington.

Mr Zulu said the airline was expected to announce some big changes to its global network in the first quarter of next year.

These include six new routes into Africa, including Cotonou in Benin, as well as the introduction of onward flights from existing African destinations to other cities in West Africa. SAA is likely to use Accra in Ghana, which has one of the most open skies on the continent, as a regional hub for these onward flights.

Mr Zulu said the revitalised fleet would also allow SAA to use its aircraft optimally and grow the airline without expanding the fleet.

While the average turnover per aircraft climbed from R432m last year to R477m this year, SAA believes it can get more out of the fleet through better route planning. This is particularly important as local carriers continue to lose out to foreign carriers.

David Prevor, head of market research and forecasts at Airbus, said that despite continued growth in international traffic to SA, South African carriers had lost 17% of the market to foreign airlines.

The new A330 aircraft will free up SAA’s A340-600 aircraft for the new ultralong-haul Chinese and US routes, while the A330 will be used to serve Bombay, London and Frankfurt as well as some African destinations.

SAA will take delivery of its first A330 when it rolls out of the Airbus factory in Toulouse, with the rest to be delivered by December next year.

"The new A330s will provide a far superior passenger experience, particularly in terms of in-flight entertainment." Over the years, passengers have frequently complained about the on-board entertainment on the older A340-200 aircraft, which the A330 will replace.

The changes, which have prompted the reintroduction of the cadet pilot scheme, will also see better co-operation with local siblings Mango and SA Express and will include a renewed focus on the domestic market, particularly on the "golden triangle" between Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

In 'emergency loan' to prevent grounding of flights.
South African Airways received an emergency loan to cover fuel costs, preventing the grounding of its local and international flights, according to a report on Sunday.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba last week signed off a guarantee that allowed the national carrier to secure a R550 million bank "facility" for fuel and other short term commitments, the Sunday Times reported.
http://www.moneyweb.co.za/moneyweb-sout ... ls-out-saa" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As previously speculated by The African Aviation Tribune, South African Airways (SA) is likely to instigate legal proceedings against Comair Ltd.'s LCC kulula (MN) over the latter's controversial new branding which mocks the South African national carrier.

Roughly two weeks ago, kulula took the bold step of rebranding itself "The Most South African Airways", a jibe at SAA who, according to BusinessTravel News, have not taken too kindly to their competitor's 'creativity' and have lodged a complaint both with their lawyers and with the South African Advertising Standards Authority.
SAA spokesperson, Tlali Tlali, told BTN: “SAA has meticulously built its instantly recognisable brand over a period of 79 years, and although imitation is the best form of flattery, SAA views the unauthorised use of our registered trademarks, copyrights and intellectual property in a very serious light. To this end we have engaged with our attorneys to act upon protecting these on our behalf.”

A few days after announcing its new controversial livery, kulula stated it would review the branding as “some people” were unhappy with the proposed design. The airline announced in a quirky press conference that it would immediately review the slogan to ‘A Very Very SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS’.

Kulula's parent, Comair Ltd, is currently involved in a court case against South African Airways (SA) disputing the legality of SAA's latest government funding.

Strike pushes South African Airways to brink of collapse

JOHANNESBURG — South African Airways (SAA) has nearly no cash left and may miss salary payments this month, a board member said on Wednesday, as a crippling six-day strike has pushed the state-owned airline to the brink of financial collapse.

[....]

“We may not have enough cash to pay salaries at the end of the month. We are still investigating how we can do that,” he said. “This is a real-time discussion we are having with National Treasury and the Department of Public Enterprises. We need help imminently.”
