Virgin Atlantic Airways commits to ten new Airbus A330 aircraft

British based Virgin Atlantic Airways, has signed a firm contract to buy six Airbus A330-300 long-range aircraft, and is leasing a further four from AerCap. Fleet renewal with the A330 reflects Virgin’s commitment to replace older aircraft and to invest in the worlds’ most environmentally efficient fleet.

Virgin’s A330-300s can seat up to 270 in Upper Class, Premium Economy and Economy, and introduce revolutionary onboard cabin products and innovations for every passenger. The aircraft will allow Virgin to offer enhanced services between the United Kingdom and the United States and the Caribbean, for the business as well as the leisure traveller.

“The A330s will be a great addition to our modern and fuel efficient fleet and will also add immense operational flexibility as well as offer revolutionary new cabin products. At the same time, the A330s fits with Virgin’s commitment to invest in the worlds’ most environmentally efficient aircraft.” said Steve Ridgway, CEO Virgin Atlantic Airways.

“We are delighted with this very significant commitment to the A330 from one of Airbus’ most valued customers,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers. “As well as offering unparalleled reliability, the A330 has the lowest fuel burn per seat making it the most eco-efficient aircraft in its class. We are honoured that a world class carrier like Virgin has chosen a world-class aircraft for its fleet.”

Virgin Atlantic has placed a $2.1bn order for ten Airbus A330-300 aircraft to help expand its route network to new destinations such as Beijing, Cancun and Vancouver.

The announcement came as founder Sir Richard Branson celebrated the airline's 25th anniversary and predicted the demise of first class cabins during the current recession.

He told the BBC: 'We hear that our principal rivals will get rid of first class all together. Who wants to spend £8-£9,000 on a first class ticket when they can travel on Virgin Atlantic for less than half that price?'

Branson also told The Sunday Times yesterday that BA was 'practically worthless' and urged the Government to resist any attempts to bail out the airline.

Virgin had considered a bid for its rival but concluded that its liabilities, especially its pension deficit, were too high.

Meanwhile, the new 270-seat A330-300s will be delivered from early 2011 and will feature technology enabling passengers to send and receive emails and texts to mobile devices.

They will integrate with Virgin Atlantic's existing fleet of 38 aircraft and help the airline expand before the arrival of 15 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, from 2013.

Steve Ridgway, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, said: 'Despite the worst economic conditions in decades, we are focusing on sustainable growth in the years ahead using the most fuel-efficient aircraft possible.'

Malaysian airline boss may buy Virgin Atlantic - report

The chief executive of Malaysia's AirAsia is considering a possible takeover bid for airline Virgin Atlantic, the Sunday Times newspaper reported.
Tony Fernandes, who runs Asia's largest budget carrier by fleet size, has renewed his interest in the UK airline after previously considering and deciding against a bid, the newspaper said in an unsourced report.

Any deal could be worth up to 1 billion pounds, it said. No one at Virgin or AirAsia could immediately be reached for comment.

Billionaire Richard Branson has a 51 percent stake in the airline he founded in 1984. Singapore Airlines paid 600 million pounds for a 49 percent stake in Virgin Atlantic in 2000.

The airline said earlier this month it had received several "lines of enquiry" about tie-ups with rivals after it hired Deutsche Bank to assess the aviation market.

It said the bank's review was expected to last for several months and did not name those interested in a possible tie-up.

Increased competition from low-cost airlines, weak demand and high fuel prices have combined to squeeze many carriers in recent years.

The low-margin industry has gone through a period of rapid consolidation and analysts believe larger carriers such as Virgin Atlantic need partners to stay ahead of the competition.

Virgin Atlantic will start its own flights to Europe, Middle East and Russia from London's Heathrow airport, as well as domestic services within the UK, to replace flights from previous partner BMI which was bought by British Airways' parent company IAG earlier this year.

CEO Steve Ridgway confirmed his airline's plans to Australian Business Traveller as we travelled on the airline's newest Airbus A330 plane, adding that: "We will operate narrowbodies on those routes, absolutely. The choice there is Boeings or Airbuses -- A320s or 737s."

The ability to fly the new routes will come from 'remedy slots' at Heathrow. Those are departure timetable positions passed to Virgin Atlantic as part of the competition regulator's deal to approve the BMI sale to BA, Ridgway explains.

"We'll go after the woefully inadequate twelve pairs of remedy slots. We need to fly that to provide competition, and we need to fly that to provide the [passengers connecting to long-distance flights] for ourselves."

In terms of routes, Ridgway rolls off a few key business traveller destinations, especially for the resources industry: "At the moment, they are to remedy competition on the routes where competition has been impacted and BA has become a monopoly. It's Aberdeen, Edinburgh, places like that."

And further afield too: "Some into Europe and what you might call mid-haul -- out into Saudi Arabia, Russia and so on. As a UK carrier and an EU carrier, we have the designation for all those routes, because some of them are bilaterally constrained [by regulators]."

It's not just the smaller single-aisle planes that will use those Heathrow slots, though: more of the A330s with the new Upper Class Dream Suite will be heading into service from London.

"The rest of this year, we have five or six deliveries of these [Airbus A330s], which the seat companies are busy making seats for. Then as soon as [the two A330s on lease to China Airlines] come back early next year they'll be retrofitted into this three-class configuration and then put into mainline on Heathrow," Ridgway says.

"They'll do India, Middle East, some Africa, and then some US flying. Probably not quite to the West Coast, but we could do Vancouver, for example."

The news of European connections is especially welcome for Virgin Australia frequent flyers, who lack a compelling European airline partner to earn points and status credits when flying around Europe -- which is now possible with Virgin Atlantic.

It wouldn't be the first time Virgin has tried its hand at European flights, with Virgin Express based in Brussels from 1996-2006 before merging to create Brussels Airlines and the short-lived Virgin Sun leisure airline experiment from 1999-2001.

Branson 'close to deal' on airline alliance as Virgin pushes into India

Virgin boss launches new route to Mumbai with pledge of more Indian destinations if he can get more slots at Heathrow

Virgin Atlantic is considering a break with its go-it-alone history by joining an airline alliance, Sir Richard Branson said as he launched Virgin's new route to Mumbai with a pledge to expand to three more Indian destinations if he can win slots at Heathrow.

Virgin said its investment in India would pass £300m with its two newest A330 aircraft now operating the Delhi and Mumbai routes. Branson said he was also looking at direct Hyderabad, Bangalore and Goa services from Heathrow, although the chances of winning scarce slots in the immediate future seemed slim.

He said finding slots would be tough but "we're going to start campaigning". It would be "part of our campaign for an extra runway to be built at Heathrow", he added.

The Virgin boss said Goa was a possible destination from either Gatwick or even Manchester airports in the meantime.

Virgin is restarting its Mumbai route after a four-year absence, doubling capacity to India with daily services to India's two biggest cities. A million people fly between Mumbai and the UK each year, and Branson said that improved slot times at Heathrow meant passengers would be able to link across the network, with connecting flights to JFK and Newark airports in the US a key plank in their viability.

He said that airline economies would push Virgin to become "part of a bigger alliance in the next few months". Branson has hinted at joining alliances in the last year and now appears to be closing in on an agreement.

He would not disclose who he was talking to, but the two most likely groupings are SkyTeam or Star Alliance, with OneWorld being the home of arch rival British Airways. Asked if he might join an alliance that included Willie Walsh, the boss of BA's parent company IAG, Branson replied: "Who? I think it's unlikely."

Meanwhile Steve Ridgway has ruled out one of the names thought most likely to succeed him as chief executive of Virgin Atlantic when he steps down in the spring. Rob Fyfe, the outgoing boss of Air New Zealand, had been widely tipped for the job but Ridgway said the former banker and director of ITV Digital felt he "had done his aviation stint". Julie Southern, Virgin's chief commercial officer, is thought to be the leading internal candidate.

Branson, however, appeared to be lining up a dynastic succession for the wider Virgin brand, telling a Delhi audience on Thursday night that either his son Sam or daughter Holly would be taking the reins when he eventually bows out.

"When my balloon bursts, one or other of them will be very capable of keeping the Virgin brand going," he said.

SIA confirms talks to sell Virgin Atlantic stake

Singapore Airlines is in talks with "interested parties" about a possible divestment of its 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic.

The Star Alliance member adds that the discussions may or may not result in a transaction, and that it will make further announcements when necessary.

While the airline did not say who it was in negotiations with, reports from the US and the UK say that Delta Air Lines has approached SIA with a view to buying the stake.

Both Delta and Virgin Atlantic could not be reached for a comment.

Singapore Airlines bought its 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic in 1999 for £600m ($961 million), but it has been looking to offload that for several years.

In October, SIA bought a 10% stake in Virgin Australia for Australian dollars (A$) 105 million ($109 million) to help to cement a partnership that the two airlines signed in 2011.

Delta Air Lines buys Virgin Atlantic stake from Singapore Airlines

(Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) said it was buying Singapore Airlines Ltd's (SIAL.SI) 49 percent stake in Virgin Atlantic VA.UL for $360 million, ending the Asian airline's disappointing 12-year investment in the British carrier.

The sale by Singapore Airlines, 56 percent owned by state investor Temasek TEM.UL, underscores its reduced reliance on battered long-haul routes to Europe and the United States and its deeper focus on Asia.

The sale by Singapore Airlines came after sources familiar with the matter said Delta, the second-largest U.S. airline by operating revenue after United Continental Holdings (UAL.N), wants to gain access to Virgin's landing rights at London's Heathrow airport.

Heathrow is a lucrative hub for corporate passengers where landing slots are hard to acquire.

The deal, which Delta said would lead to a trans-Atlantic joint venture with Virgin Atlantic, is subject to regulatory clearance in the United States and Europe.

Singapore Airlines bought 49 percent of Virgin Atlantic for 600 million pounds in 1999, but wrote off goodwill amounting to 96 percent of its purchase price of Virgin.

Création d'une JV

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) and Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. have reached an agreement for a new joint venture that will create an expanded trans-Atlantic network and enhance competition between the U.K. and North America, offering greater benefits for customers traveling on those routes.

As part of this joint venture agreement, Delta will invest $360 million in Virgin Atlantic, acquiring a 49 percent stake currently held by Singapore Airlines. Virgin Group and Sir Richard Branson will retain the majority 51 percent stake and Virgin Atlantic Airways will retain its brand and operating certificate.

Highlights of the agreement include:

* A fully integrated joint venture that will operate on a "metal neutral" basis with both airlines sharing the costs and revenues from all joint venture flights.
* A combined trans-Atlantic network between the United Kingdom and North America with 31 peak-day round-trip flights.
* Enhanced benefits for customers including cooperation on services between New York and London, with a combined total of nine daily round-trip flights from London-Heathrow to John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.
* Reciprocal frequent flyer benefits.
* Shared access to Delta Sky Club and Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse airport lounges for elite passengers.

The airlines will file an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation for antitrust immunity, which will allow a closer relationship and coordination on schedules and operations. The transaction also will be reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Union's competition regulator and other relevant authorities. The share purchase and the joint venture are expected to be implemented by the end of 2013.

Delta and Virgin Atlantic customers will be able to earn and redeem miles across Delta's SkyMiles and Virgin Atlantic's FlyingClub frequent flyer programs. Premium customers also will have reciprocal access to the Delta Sky Club and Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse airport lounges. Full details will be announced as services become available.

The partnership allows both carriers to offer a greatly expanded network at Heathrow and to overcome slot constraints, which have limited the growth and competitive capability of both airlines. The two carriers will operate a total of 31 peak-day round-trip flights between the U.K. and North America, 23 of which operate at London-Heathrow. The enlarged network will benefit customers of both carriers by providing greater access to a broader network, improved connectivity and convenient booking options.

As part of a $3 billion investment in enhanced global products, services and airport facilities, all of Delta's flights between the U.S. and London-Heathrow feature full flat-bed seats offering direct aisle access in the BusinessElite cabin. These flights also offer Delta's popular Economy Comfort seating in the forward section of the economy cabin. Economy Comfort offers four additional inches of legroom and 50 percent more recline compared to standard economy seats. All cabins offer in-seat audio and video on demand with a broad range of in-flight entertainment options. Delta also will begin introducing in-flight WiFi service on international flights beginning in 2013.

Très poussif sur les vols domestiques...

Virgin domestic flights a ‘disaster’ as passengers stick with no-frills rivals

Flights branded as 'Little Red' have experienced low sales

Virgin Atlantic’s venture into domestic aviation has proved financially disastrous. During the first six months flying from Heathrow to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Manchester, the average flight has been only one-third full. For every occupied seat, two have gone empty – even though the Virgin plane is cheaper than a Virgin train.

Flights from Heathrow to Manchester, branded as “Little Red”, started in late March. Links to Scotland began early in April. At the time, Sir Richard Branson promised Little Red would “deliver Virgin Atlantic’s rock and roll spirit as well as real value for money”.

Few passengers have been tempted so far. The Independent calculates that 825,000 seats were available during the first six months. Virgin initially told us that 250,000 passengers had flown on Little Red, but late today said the number was “closer to 300,000”. If the true figure is midway between the two, the “load factor” was 33 per cent – in contrast to the industry standard of close to 80 per cent, while low-cost carriers such as easyJet and Ryanair achieve around 90 per cent.

The aviation analyst John Strickland said: “The poor loads indicate that the majority of point-to-point traffic on domestic flights now uses low-cost services from other London airports.

The Independent’s journey aboard this afternoon’s Virgin Atlantic flights 3047 and 3048 from Heathrow to Manchester and back appeared to confirm the low sales. The service is operated by Airbus A320 jets fitted with 174 seats. The northbound leg carried 46 passengers, including two infants. Going south, I was one of only 38 passengers – meaning the plane was less than a quarter full. I bought a ticket on the day for £64, £12 less than Virgin Trains’ lowest same-day rail fare between Manchester and Euston.
