Dépèche AFP : "Un Boeing 737-800 d'Ethiopian Airlines s'est écrasé lundi matin en mer Méditerranée au large du Liban, après avoir décollé de l'aéroport de Beyrouth, a déclaré le ministre libanais du Transport, Ghazi Aridi. L'appareil se rendait à Addis Abeba.

Le ministre a précisé que le vol 409 d'Ethiopian Airlines avait perdu le contact avec la tour de contrôle peu après son départ.

Selon un responsable de l'aéroport sous couvert de l'anonymat, une boule de feu a été aperçue au moment du crash, qui a eu lieu par très mauvais temps. Mais le président libanais a aussitôt écarté l'hypothèse d'un acte de terrorisme ou de sabotage.

Quatre-vingt-dix personnes se trouvaient à bord, dont l'épouse de l'ambassadeur de France au Liban, Marla Sanchez Pietton. 54 Libanais, 22 Ethiopiens, un Irakien, un Syrien, 2 Libano-Britanniques, 1 Libano-Canadien, 1 Libano-Russe et sept membres d'équipage étaient également dans l'avion.

Le Bureau français d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses (BEA) pour la sécurité de l'aviation civile a été sollicité par le ministère des Transports pour enquêter sur l'accident. L'armée libanaise, la marine et la force intérimaire des Nations unies au Liban (Finul) assistent les équipes de sauveteurs sur le site de la catastrophe."

An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration ET-AMZ performing flight ET-409 from Beirut (Lebanon) to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) with 82 passengers and 8 crew, departed Beirut around 2:35L (00:35Z) when the airplane lost height and impacted the Mediterranean Sea about 2nm off the coast of Naameh and about 4nm southsouthwest of the airport.

Lebanon's Authorities initially reported, they were able to recover 7 survivors, but did not confirm that report later. 14 bodies have been recovered from the Sea.

A thunderstorm system was moving into Lebanon at the time. Airport Officials confirmed, the airplane was taking off in stormy weather, and continued, that the airplane has been hit by lightning.

Witnesses on the ground at Naameh reported having seen the airplane being hit by multiple lightnings.

Ethiopian Airlines confirmed the loss of flight ET-409 saying, that they have no information of survivors. An investigation team has been dispatched to the scene. The airline later reported ET-AMZ being involved in the accident although radar data suggested the airframe involved was ET-ANB.
