WOW AIR ACQUIRES ICELAND EXPRESS

WOW air has today completed its acquisition of all Iceland Express flight operations and scheduling.  Little or no disruption will be caused for Iceland Express ticket holders and WOW air will ensure that all obligations to Iceland Express customers are met.  Over the coming days the company will contact the small number of passengers who can expect slight changes to their travel itinerary. The WOW air service centre will be open until 22.00 GMT (23.00 BST, 00.00 CET) all this week. The telephone number is (+354) 590 3000. Increased frequency and more destinations The arrangement is not a merger. WOW air is instead taking control of all Iceland Express flight operations. The company will hereafter fly under the WOW air brand, which will continue to emphasise entertaining service, increased legroom and always offering the lowest cost air travel to and from Iceland. This acquisition will create a powerful Icelandic low-fares airline with new destinations and a lot more flights. WOW air will immediately offer an increased number of flights to London and Copenhagen, as well as flights over the winter to Berlin. Flights are also on offer to Salzburg during the ski season, and to Warsaw and Kaunas over Christmas. Starting next spring WOW air will fly four Airbus A320 planes and provide 400,000 seats to and from Iceland. The airline will fly to 15 European destinations next summer:  London, Copenhagen, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Milan, Zurich, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Lyon, Alicante, Frankfurt, Vilnius and Warsaw. Alongside offering more destinations, the airline will also increase the number of flights offered on many routes, a statement said.

WOW air considering A321-200s for US flights from 2014

WOW air is considering adding two A321-200s in an extended range configuration to its fleet by spring 2014 according to a report by Airliners.de to launch routes between Reykjavik Keflavik and New York as its first US route. WOW air had already announced earlier this year that it plans to set up own flight operations by the end of the summer season 2012. It currently charters two A320-200s from Air VIA and Avion Express for its flights but plans to have four A320-200s during the high season next summer.

Sur le Transatlantique l'été prochain

Iceland's WOW air to launch maiden transatlantic flights in early 2014

WOW air will enter the transatlantic market with the launch of a six times weekly Reykjavik Keflavik to Boston service beginning Spring 2014.

The new route will be operated by an A320-200 and will also mark the carrier's maiden US service. According to Bloomberg, the airline is considering acquiring either B757-200s or A321-200s to help in expanding its North American route network. “One of the reasons we’ve started with Boston is because it’s within range but we are actively looking at what aircraft would be the most suitable for new, longer destinations,” CEO Skuli Mogensen said. “I’m very excited about adding North America.” The Icelandic carrier currently serves Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Italy, Lithuania, Austria, Poland and France.

WOW exploite déjà des lignes depuis Dublin, via l'Islande, vers Boston, Washington D.C, Montréal, Toronto, L.A and San Francisco.

Russia Won’t Let Icelandic Airlines Fly To China, Japan And South Korea

Planned flights from Iceland to China, Japan and South Korea will not be happening any time soon, as Russia has still not granted Iceland permission to fly over their airspace.

Sources close to the Icelandic tourist industry website Turisti.is say the reason is likely because of the trade sanctions against Russia that Iceland is still participating in.

Talks between Russian and Icelandic authorities on the subject took place at the beginning of last summer, but there has been no definitive result from these discussions. Apart from the tensions over the trade sanctions, Russia has also asked that Icelandic flights fly to Russia for an undetermined period of time before Russia grants the green light to fly over their airspace.

Furthermore, flying over Russia can be expensive. Airlines are charged 7,000 to 10,000 ISK per passenger, each way, for the privilege.

There is, however, a work-around: Icelandair and WOW Air will begin flying to New Delhi, this autumn and this December, respectively. From there, travelers will be able to take connecting flights with other airlines to China, Japan and South Korea.

WOW Air seeks investors

WOW Air’s sole owner and CEO, Skúli Mogensen, is seeking investors to finance the airline, according to Morgunblaðið, but the newspaper reports this morning that it has obtained an investor presentation, intended for the purpose of issuing bonds.

According to the presentation, the airline’s EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) was a loss of about USD 45 million (EUR 39.6 million) from July 2017 through June 2018, and a negative USD 13.5 million for all of 2017. A business forecast for all of 2018 assumes a negative EBIT of USD 28 million (EUR 24.6 million) and an EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, debt and amortization) of negative USD 6 million. By comparison, the EBITDA for 2017 was a positive USD 4 million.

Has Wow Air over-expanded?

Reykjavik-based Wow Air has axed another three US routes.

According to USA Today it will cancel its St Louis route this coming January and will not restart its seasonal flights to Cincinnati and Cleveland.

All three routes were launched only a few months ago.

Wow Air is quoted by USA Today as saying “Unfortunately, it has to be said that St Louis was a disappointment for Wow Air this summer in terms of end results, with load factors that were not achieving the targets that were set for the route in the beginning.”

Their low fares mean that LCCs (low-cost carriers) must achieve higher load-factors than conventional airlines to turn a profit.

Even before its Delhi route has even started, Wow Air decided not to increase flight frequency in January 2019 from three to five weekly flights as planned.
