United Airlines va commander 25 long-courriers à Airbus et 25 à Boeing

United Airlines today announced a significant investment in the company's future with a widebody aircraft order that will enable the carrier to reduce operating costs and better match
aircraft to key markets it serves, while providing its customers with
state-of-the-art cabin comfort. The new technology aircraft will reduce fuel
burn and environmental impact, while enabling service to a broader array of
international destinations. United ordered 25 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft and 25
Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft and has future purchase rights for 50 of each
aircraft.

United expects to take delivery of the aircraft between 2016 and 2019; at the
same time it will retire its international Boeing 747s and 767s. These 50 new
aircraft will reduce the average seat count by about 19 percent compared to
the aircraft they will replace, and by about 10 percent when averaged over the
entire international fleet. With the Airbus A350 powered by the Rolls Royce
Trent XWB engine, and the Boeing 787 powered by either the Rolls Royce Trent
1000 or the GE GEnx, United estimates it will reduce its fuel costs and carbon
emissions from the 50 aircraft by about 33 percent. Additionally, the company
expects average lifetime maintenance costs for the new aircraft to be
approximately 40 percent lower per available seat mile than the aircraft that
will be retired.

United is considering Bombardier’s CSeries as a replacement for the Boeing 737s recently dropped from the carrier’s fleet, Chairman and CEO Glenn Tilton told The DAILY.
The carrier intends to issue a narrowbody request for proposal next year including a 110-seat requirement as well as successors for the Airbus A319s and A320s currently operated by the U.S. legacy carrier. United will also seek a replacement for its Boeing 757 fleet.
“The CSeries is a natural replacement for the 737s. With our current fleet [of regional aircraft] that would give us 70-seaters, 90-seaters and 110-seaters… Then we can look at the new generation of narrowbodies,” said Tilton
Both Airbus and Boeing have indicated that a new-generation narrowbody, rather than an upgraded A320 or 737s, will not be offered for roughly another decade.
With Bombardier’s current product offering, such an order from United would focus on the two variants of CS100, the baseline version of the CSeries family. Bombardier plans to introduce this variant to market first, in 2013.

Un steward de la compagnie aérienne United Airlines a finalement pris sa retraite à 83 ans, après 61 ans de bons et loyaux services.

Ron Akana a effectué le weekend dernier le dernier vol de sa carrière, entre les aéroports de Denver et Lihue à Hawaï d’où il est originaire, à bord bien sûr d’un avion de la compagnie américaine. Les pilotes ont signalé l’évènement aux passagers, qui se sont succédé pour lui remettre des cartes de vœux, le Boeing 767 étant salué par des canons à eau à son arrivée. Puis il est rentré dans le Colorado pour y prendre une retraite bien méritée, sa longévité au poste de steward devant le faire entrer au Livre Guinness des Records.

Recruté en 1949 grâce à une petite annonce dans le journal local alors qu’il étudiait à l’université d’Honolulu, M. Akana reconnait avoir été d’abord « excité à l’idée de rejoindre le continent », puis avoir « aimer travailler avec des filles ». Malgré une interruption de deux ans pendant la guerre de Corée, il a évidemment vu passer toute l’histoire de l’aviation, du vol à hélice où le tabac était autorisé aux avions à réactions qui ont divisé par deux le temps de voyage, à la télévision à bord – et à la sécurité post-11 Septembre. Moment le plus mémorable de sa carrière : une rencontre avec Frank Sinatra et Deborah Kerr.

Ron Akana a parcouru quelques 320 millions de kilomètres, mais aurait bien patienté encore un peu le temps de voir le 787 Dreamliner rejoindre la flotte de United Airlines. Mais sa retraite ne va pas le rendre grégaire pour autant : vu les « avantages énormes » qu’il a reçus de United Airlines, il continuera à voyager « tant il y a de choses à voir » – mais désormais accompagné de sa femme Elizabeth.

United Airlines (Chicago) has announced plans to launch nonstop service between its San Francisco hub and Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood, with once-weekly flights beginning on March 2, 2013, and daily service beginning April 9, 2013. The new flights will operate with Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

“South Florida is the largest region in the country not currently served by United from San Francisco,” said Jim Ferea, United’s managing director of domestic planning. “We’re pleased to link these two areas that are important to both business and leisure travelers.”

The daily flights will depart from San Francisco at 8:30 a.m. and arrive in Fort Lauderdale at 5:05 p.m. The return flights will depart Fort Lauderdale at 5:55 p.m. and arrive in San Francisco at 9:15 p.m.

United Airlines will base the majority of its Boeing 747-400 fleet at its San Francisco hub from April 2013, as it focuses on improving the reliability of the fleet.

The Chicago-based Star Alliance member says that the concentration of spare parts and tooling at the airport will allow it to reduce maintenance issues ahead of the summer 2013 travel season, in an employee newsletter on 19 December.

"These changes will allow us to more effectively utilise aircraft downtime, and we have full inventory support through the maintenance base warehouse and support shops," says Chris Carrick, SFO line maintenance managing director at United, in the newsletter.

United will replace 747s with Boeing 777-200s on its Chicago O'Hare to Tokyo Narita flight from 3 January 2013, and its Chicago-Hong Kong-Singapore flight from March 2013, it says.

The airline will upgrade flights between San Francisco and Frankfurt, London Heathrow, Osaka Kansai, and Taipei to 747s from 777s as a result of the shift. It will also upgrade flights between Honolulu and Tokyo Narita to a 747 from a 777.

United will continue to use 747-400s on flights between Los Angeles and Sydney, Australia.
